A Locals’ Guide to the Best Hiking in the Poconos
The Pocono Mountains cover 2,400 square miles of gorgeous outdoor scenery and opportunities for exploration. When you’re looking to tap into your adventurous side, there are plenty of options for hiking in the Poconos. Whether you’re in the mood for a simple stroll, chasing waterfalls, taking a guided tour, or embarking on a day-long excursion, a memorable journey awaits you.
Best Hiking in the Poconos
Bushkill Falls
Also known as the “Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Bushkill Falls is one of the most popular Poconos hiking spots. There are four paths to choose from, each accommodating a different skill level and leading to the falls. The green trail takes only 15 minutes to complete and involves no climbing, whereas the red trail leads you to eight nearby waterfalls during an advanced hiking experience. No matter which trail you choose, you will be able to witness the beauty of Pennsylvania’s most treasured cascade.
Promised Land State Park
Promised Land State Park is located on the Pocono Plateau and boasts nearly 50 miles of hiking trails. Some trails will lead you to a beautiful glacial lake while others wind through islands and gorgeous scenery. It is highly recommended to embark on these trails in mid-May to June as this is the prime season for the native mountain laurels and rhododendrons to bloom. In the fall, early October is usually the best time to take in awe-inspiring sights of brightly colored leaves underneath a bright blue sky. The trails in Promised Land State Park are also great for mountain biking!
Guided Hikes
If you want to hit the trails with an expert, Gary’s Guided Hiking tours is the best choice for you! Gary Gentile authored the book “Lehigh Gorge Trail Guide,” and continues his passion for the outdoors by providing visitors with private tours of the Poconos. With your choice of Run State Park, Glen Onoko, the Game Lands, and more, Gary will plan an excursion that caters to your experience level and provides a one-of-a-kind way to experience the Poconos mountains. His contact information can be found on the Pocono Mountains website!
Plan an All-Day Excursion
For the outdoor junkies and those who enjoy a good adventure, some local outdoor tour companies day-long excursions hiking in the Poconos. During the warmer seasons, one of the most popular options is the Big Day Out with Pocono Whitewater. In addition to hiking, the Big Day Out adventure includes rafting and mountain biking! Enjoy mountain biking along the Lehigh Gorge Rail-Trail, a hike by the Lehigh River (where you’ll see an abandoned railroad tunnel!), then finish the day with a white water rafting trip! It’s a fun-filled escapade that the entire family will love. Visit Pocono Whitewater’s website for more information.
